F-Zero GP Legend - Game Boy Micro

8 October 2006 02:29

Close your eyes and propel forward about 200 years where you will engage in a velocity-induced adventure – this adventure is none other than the new addition to the franchise, F-Zero GP Legend.

This time around, you'll be able to race as many new characters including Captain Falcon, the Black Shadow and of course Rick Wheeler, but you now have control over some nifty vehicle adjustments like calibration your top speed in conjunction with your acceleration. Tweak your vehicle to shave those extra seconds off your lap and you just might be the next champion of the known (and unknown) universe.

I personally had a lot of fun with this game. In fact, my co-worker and I spent hours on end in a time trial to defeat one another, and of course I reigned supreme.

What makes F-Zero special is its ability to race levels multiple times and still find ways to improve your score. This is achieve with shortcuts, special boost modules and specially-timed bounces off walls to knock opponents out.

The story mode allows you to chase your opponents through a series of mazes and very dangerous curvy tracks. The better you get, the more options you get.

As you progress further through the game, many new characters and vehicles will be unlocked allowing you to keep your edge.

For those using the micro, here's a tip. Change your controller settings for your boost. Instead of using both L and R to boost, change it to UP, trust me, you'll be boosting more efficiently and with more control in no time.

Now let's talk game play…I like the natural progression of the game. When I complete a level, I feel as though I'm getting something because I'm rewarded with new vehicles. Even on easier levels, you'll find the tracks to be a little challenging if you're a wall-hugger. Stay off the walls!

The graphics in F Zero are great for a portable game. Even on the Micro, the graphics are clean and crisp. No need to squint in this game. The characters and vehicles are well drawn and animated.

The sounds and music in this game are a few notches above the music we're used to in the days of Nintendo, which is not to say it's bad, in fact, it ties in very nicely with the graphics style. I myself have always been a great fan of 8-bit music. F Zero has that, but with more edge and reverberation.

And finally, there's the game's longevity. Believe it or not, you'll be playing this game a very long time because there are several modes of play to explore. Story mode will keep you on your toes, Time Trial will have you kicking and screaming for ways to shave off .03 seconds off your time, etc. F Zero GP Legend has done a splendid job in getting players to keep battling it out for extended periods of time, not to mention with multiple human opponents.

Game play: 8.5
Graphics: 8.0
Sound: 8.5
Longevity: 8.5

Overall, this racing game is a lot of fun to play and exciting for many players.

The Good: It will keep you going for days and days and you will be able to find short cuts whenever you play

The Bad: Boosting with L and R is hard ! Configure controls and set Boost to the Up button.
