The App Store censorship horse may have been beaten to dead, but the German media --now under Apple's fire-- isn't surrendering. Hopefully, their blitzkrieg will be successful, and the European Union will open an investigation that the US would follow.

Tracking When, Where and How People Have Sex in Real-Time March 11, 2010
Part Twitter, part Google Maps, IJustMadeLove.com is the brainchild of Cyprian Cieÿkiewicz, a 26-year-old programmer in Poland who got the idea for the site in May. While driving home one night, he started wondering what it would take to create a Web site with flashing notifications representing where people have exchanged bodily fluids.

EFF: Ending the EU Data Retention Directive March 11, 2010
The German Constitutional Court issued a much-anticipated decision, striking down its data retention law as violating human rights. It was an important victory for Europe’s Freedom Not Fear movement, which was formed to oppose the EU Data Retention Directive. But it was also a reminder of the political work which remains to be done to defeat it.

Digg: Saying Yes to NoSQL; Going Steady with Cassandra March 10, 2010
Digg is committed to the use & development of open source software & we're keen to avoid the cost of proprietary large-scale storage solutions. We were inspired by Google & Amazon's broad use of their non-relational BigTable and Dynamo systems. We evaluated all the usual open source NoSQL suspects. After considerable debate, we decided to go with

Free wireless broadband plan is déjà vu all over again March 10, 2010
The NBP will ask the government to "consider use of spectrum for a free or very low cost wireless broadband service.'' That's odd, we thought, since the FCC and Congress have been considering such an idea for years.
D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit DIR-655 Router

D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit DIR-655 Router

28 February 2007 00:55

If you have been fallowing our articles and news updates over the past few weeks, you might have gotten a closer overview of D-Links latest networking offerings in our CES 2007 report. Their new networking line has received some very interesting attention at this year’s consumer’s electronics event.

As with every year’s show, D-Link always managed to stand out with their full-size display booth along with the friendly representatives showing off their newest and upcoming innovations. This year was not different; their Draft 802.11n wireless powered products generated a lot of talk among attendees. Their latest product’s options and features are ever improving.

In this article we will be taking a closer look at their top of the line DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit router. This specific line was designed for larger homes and offices sharing high speed internet over multiple PCs, game consoles and digital home devices such as streaming high definition media players.

The product

Whether you currently own a D-Link or a different brand router, you would automatically notice D-Link’s fresh new look. It stands out from its competition and even from D-Link’s current line. It’s based on a white glossy finish surrounded by a black trim that wraps around the casing; giving you that unique and clean Apple touch.

Three removable antennas (3x3x3) are present for flexible installation along a wall mount giving you the choice of easily installing the unit on a wall. Esthetically speaking, this new look will make installing the unit in a visible area a delight.

The DIR-655 router is a draft 802.11n compliant device featuring Gigabit local area network (LAN) and Gigabit wide area network (WAN) ports. Its 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch will ensure optimal wired transfer speeds.

In order to get a slight overview of the Gigabit advantage, we moved around a 3.4gb video file from computer to computer and were very satisfied to find out the average time was set at 3 minutes and 22 seconds.

In addition to its specifications, the product features full support for Windows connect now (WCN) facilitating the connection for WCN enabled devices via its USB port. Backed with the 802.11n compliance D-Link claims that, compared to current 802.11g devices, the DIR-655 can deliver speeds up to 14 times faster and with 6 times superior operating range.

Near the router, we achieved speeds of 120 Mpbs and more using the DWA-652 Xtreme N PC card. At a distance of 400 feet, speeds stabilize at around 60 Mpbs. Operating range on the 802.11n standard is improved, however, don’t expect a signal past 1,000 feet. The optimal connection range is 300-600 feet. Note: It’s vital to use the D-Link Xtreme N line of cards to achieve these numbers. Keep in mind that the unit remains fully compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b standards.

A strong addition on the DIR-655 is its intelligent wireless quality of service (QoS) powered by the Stream Engine technology from Ubicom. Many of today’s routers on the market pass all wired and wireless traffic into a single data stream resulting in slower transfers. QoS technology analyzes and separates data into multiple streams which are then categorized by sensitivity and delay in order to give priority to applications that require more bandwidth such as VoIP over traditional web browsing.

This innovation automatically prioritizes high-bandwidth on latency sensitive wireless traffic to provide enhanced lag free gaming, clearer voice over internet (VoIP) calls and even full high definition video streaming across the network. It goes without saying that if you simultaneously download large data from the internet, stream HD video, play a game online while using VoIP, it will lag.

The DIR-655 supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption. In addition, it utilizes dual active firewalls (SPI and NAT) for additional security.

The installation process of the DIR-655 was easy. The package includes an installation CD. All ports on the back are labeled and are color coded in order to facilitate the installation. The installation software is an easy to use step by step wizard that will help you go through the basic configuration of the router. Your first step is choosing whether you are upgrading from a current router or installing the DIR-655 as a new device. The rest of the wizard offers animated explanations demonstrating how to connect all the cables. Once the wizard is completed, the unit will automatically reboot and your wireless network is ready. We found the internal management interface to be very straight forward; it’s easy and detailed.

Summation

The specifications and features speak for themselves. D-Link managed to bring an extremely innovative networking solution for people seeking to improve their current or upcoming network for under $200$. Whether you are trying to get maximal performance out of your multitasking networking needs or take advantage of enhanced wired and wireless connectivity; the DIR-655 would be strong choice. The Xtreme N Gigabit DIR-655 is by far one of the most advanced and feature packed router on today’s market. We liked it so much, it's curently powering our busy office network.
