Summation
The Pentium 4 based on the Northwood is Intel’s
powerful weapon against AMD. The transition to the 0.13 Micron process allows
the Northwood core to hit the 3000MHz+ mark with little or no modifications
at all. At the same time, it allowed Intel to implement more L2 cache memory
for superior performance. AMD’s XP2000+ is already in its 0.18 process limitation;
their upcoming 0.13 Thoroughbred core will replace the current 0.18 Athlon
and will be their weapon against the Pentium 4.
For the average user, the Athlon XP2000+ remains the smartest solution for
its lower price and good performance. Someone seeking for maximum performance
will be better with a Pentium 4 considering its strong overclocking potential.
