Soltek SL-75DRV2
SocketA DDR Motherboard
Sometimes a good thing can get
better. In the case of the original Soltek SL-75DRV that I reviewed this was the
very situation. Shortly after my review went live word came out that Soltek was
releasing a new version of the board with the new KT266A chipset. The new chipset
offers compatibility with AMD's current XP CPUs and offers improvements over the
original KT266 chipset that caused reliability issues. Misr
Corp was kind enough to send us the evaluation unit.

First
Impressions
I went
trolling around Soltek's site looking for a picture of the SL-75DRV2. The pic
to the right is actually of the original board. Click on it and you will see a
couple of very small details. First, the northbridge is now actively cooled with
not only a heatsink but also a fan. That should help alleviate lockups caused
by chipset overheating. What was also of great
interest to me was that the new board also features AGP voltage adjustments. This
may be the ticket to make the SL-75DRV2 even more overclocking friendly than its
already impressive predecessor was. Imagine being able to boost your AGP voltage
in order to get instant stability within games.
What
is probably already obvious is that the SL75DV2 is not a complete redesign but
rather an improvement on an already good motherboard. VIA has a history of releasing
updates to their chipsets that are more stable and mature and it stands to reason
that you don't have to redesign the wheel in order to take advantage of a chipset
update.
