Layout / PCB

Three well-positioned DIMM slots are located near the upper IDE connectors. The chipset (815) can house up to 512MB of memory. Supported memory includes synchronous DRAM and ECC memory.

The DIMM slots may interfere with video card (AGP) such as the Voodoo5 due its larger size. This little problem has been noticed on several of today’s motherboards and generally results in unpleasant experiences. If not this AGP/DIMM Interfering problem, the Layout is very well suited for an 815 motherboard and offers what we would expect of Transcend.

As you may already saw, the positioning of the HDD/FDD connector ports are very comfortable, as they are out of the way of all components. This board features two 40-pin IDE connectors marked as IDE1 and IDE2. Each connector supports up to two IDE devices. The ASL3 board features a built in 3D Audio Chip thanks to the AC97 codec on the ICH2 controller. This particular codec is very similar to the Sound-Blaster 16 card and should satisfy most of the office users. However, if you are playing a lot of games and/or use a multi-channel sound system, you would be better off with a normal high-end audio card such as the SBLIVE. The implanted audio solution features four different video connectors on the PCB. These connectors allow you to receive stereo audio input from sound sources such as CD-ROM drives and TV Tuners.

1MHz FSB increasements / Voltage Regulations

The ASL3 board features a jumperless control panel for front side bus adjustments. The featured JP4 jumper allows you to set the FSB speed in three different options: 66, 100 and 133MHz. When you go for the 66Mhz option, you would have the choice of going from 66MHz to 99MHz through the frequency/Voltage BIOS Control in 1MHz increments. When the jumper is set to 100MHz, you have the choice of selecting a system bus frequency from 100 MHz to 132MHz in 1MHz increments. At last, when it is set at 133MHz you can select a frequency from 133 to 166MHz in 1MHz increments.
The ASL3 also features a core-voltage changer for the CPU. You can push the CPU up to 0.4V above the standard speed. The choices include (+0.05 / +0.1 / +0.2 / +0.3 +0.4 / -0.05 / -0.1)

The ASL3 features a maximal expansion interface for an 815 board (PCI/ISA/CNR/AGP). It includes six PCI slots continuing with a CNR slot. The AGP slot is a universal port so you can install almost any AGP adapters. The CNR slot is shared with the sixth PCI slot.
